Your Website is Better than You Think

It’s true, most websites work great. I can lease a server from pretty much any hosting company, slap a website on it, and expect up time of 99% or greater with no issues for years. Another thing websites do really well? Nothing. This post is directed specifically to small business owners, because I know many of you have websites that do just that, they do nothing really well.

Time to Set a Goal

The new year is around the corner, and it’s time to start setting up some goals. So here is a goal for those of you with websites that work well at doing nothing. Maybe I shouldn’t say “nothing”. I’m sure your nothing website offers contact information about your business, and maybe an about us page. Working great for you, isn’t it? Monthly fees, webmaster fees, for what?

The goal: Get your website to actually do something for your business.

Scratch off “giving visitor company information” from the list. Get your web visitors to do some sort of action on your website that could benefit your company is some way. A common example? Set up a newsletter email list. Any business can benefit from sending out mailers…FOR FREE.

Another example? Have them print a coupon that they can use in your store. Another example? Have them make a reservation, or dare I say, BUY something. There are all sorts of things you can get your web visitors to do that  can benefit your company. It just takes a little brainstorming, and many of the ideas could come from your top competitors and their websites. See what your competitors make their visitors do.

Everyone Else

Stop having a website because everyone else does. Don’t have a website because you have a business, and every other business out there has one. Those reasons do not qualify as reasons to have a website. Think, what do I want my website to do, and build for that.

Great tips. Every website should have a strong call to action. Your website should make your visitors want to do something. I personally know about the benefits of having a newsletter. I have 80,000 subscribers and it sure beats having a website with just an about us page.

That’s a really powerful message you are giving about having the website actually do something. I would say, depending on what industry you are in I would say leverage your website as a way for people who are searching for something in the local area, they find you first because of your website is listed highly in the search for the right keywords.

    Till then,

    Jean

Agreed 100%. My business is entirely web-based and it’s served us well. Much much more room for improvement though.

  8. Stop having a website because everyone else does. Don’t have a website because you have a business, and every other business out there has one.
