If you are looking to market your website, Google has a great little feature (and it works using Firefox 3.5), that allows you to do a little more research on the site that you want to buy ad space from.

Google Ad Planner

Google Ad Planner has been around for about a year now, and I think it really hasn’t received the attention it deserves. I’m astonished how many people go to Alexa for data about a website first when they could easily just go to Google, a company that knows a lot more about user behavior and web traffic than Alexa.

I suppose it comes off a little to complex, or not what you are looking for when you visit its home page. You just want some quick data, and not a whole thing where you have to set up an ad campaign plan. The trick is to know one of their deeper pages:  Google Ad Planner, Site Profile. This is the page I love. Just type in the website you want to research, and you will get traffic details along with demographics if available.

Their Stats

There are just a few things you need to know about the stats that are not totally obvious. To the left of the chart the data shows visitors per month, and it can show it two ways. Data may be estimated, similar to Alexa, or actual, based on site analytics that the webmaster has decided to share.

All you have to do is look for the little graph symbol as seen in image above, and you know the data is real. A few of the sites I checked out, but had no data available. If that is the case, I can only expect they are too new, or have very little traffic. That might be a good indicator to hold back on using them as an advertiser alone.
