Long ago sold on using valid HTML, I made the choice that I would rather not have a WordPress plugin on this site if it meant I could not have valid HTML. I have several reasons why: Reasons Why Validating HTML is Important.

Well, I have another reason. Making sure your site is still valid after installing a plugin, can prove you may not need the plugin at all! Continue reading »

wordpressI don’t know about you, but I’ve been working with WordPress for many, many years, and have greatly admired people who can create wonderful WordPress themes. The most I can do is log into the WordPress admin area and scroll through the different available themes, download one and click “activate”. Badda Bing. Job done. But the free themes always seemed to require customization which was just beyond my simplistic editing (hacking) know-how. I’ve always wondered how the heck people design wonderful-looking themes… are they graphic-design geniuses, or what? Continue reading »

tweetmeme2

For those of using the TweetMeme plugin for WordPress, they just updated it. For those of you that have never used the plugin, it allows Twitter users to tweet your post by simply clicking the button. Mine is at the bottom of this post on the left. Continue reading »

The keyword in this post is RATINGS! I guess this is just a WordPress kind of day, considering my last post. Since I have had this blog, I have been looking for a good star rating system for my posts. It’s a great way to get reader feedback.

Every plugin I tried though, either didn’t work, didn’t work with this particular blog, or just looked like junk. Finally, I have one, and I did nothing to get it! Continue reading »

If you are using WordPress, here a couple of great plugins to help keep those doors locked, and your site safe.

Security Plugins for WordPress

The first plugin is WordPress Firewall, from SEO Egghead. This is a great little plugin that will block traversal, and SQL injection attacks to name a few capabilities. You can whitelist your own IP, and even get an email when an attack is trying to be made. I do use the email me feature, and I do get emails. Continue reading »

OK WordPress team. I love your blogging software, but in the last update (2.8.6) you sneaked in silly button in the top right header that I do not like. You know the one, the drop down post controller button or whatever it is you want to call it. It’s out of place, it duplicates an already visible menu, and it doesn’t even include a link to the dashboard. Continue reading »

So you just wrote a new post on your WordPress Blog, and it has a whopping zero comments so far. Like bragging about it? I don’t. I also don’t like search engines like Google caching 10 counts of the word comment. If there are no comments, I say, why brag about it. Fortunately,  WordPress lets you easily customize this in your templates.

Comment Template Tag

The comment template tag used in your WordPress site appears something like this: comments_popup_link(’0 Comments, ’1 Comment’, ‘% Comments’) Continue reading »

This is a quick little tip for you WordPress users that like to hack or change your plugins. If you are like me, you often end up hacking or customizing the code within some of your plugins. What happens when that plugin version has been updated by the author though, and you just clicked update? Ouch! You just lost the changes you made. Continue reading »
