For those of you that know me, you know you can often find me on the busy Digital Point webmaster forum as ‘camp185′. A common thread I see there is “What other forums are out there”. Well, I have found another busy forum for those of you to expand your horizons. It’s UK Webmaster Forum.

Powered by vBulletin, like DP, they are ready to rock. Unlike DP though, the site doesn’t seem to revolve around Google, something I like. Here are the different forum categories they have on it.

  • General
  • Website Traffic and Marketing
  • Webmaster Marketplace – My initial interest
  • Web Design and Website Development
  • Business Discussions
  • Boss Cart Support Forums
  • Community
  • The Lounge

One of the really cool things they had on it, and I think it will quickly become normal thing, is the tag cloud they added. I’m not a big fan of tag clouds for a small site, but on a forum it is a perfect fit. It’s an easy way to see what is hot, and what is not. They also put the vBulletin software to work by using more of its functions vs. DP. Scrolling near the bottom they additionally have the Top 5 Stats which ranks many of popular activities like most popular threads. Like the tag cloud it can be handy to see what is going on.

Honestly, I think this is the first place I have seen a tag cloud on a forum, and I just think it’s a great idea. In fact I think it’s the most effective use of a tag cloud out there. Two big thumbs up for UK Webmaster Forum. Now I will have to see how well they respond to this American guy when I start posting. Look for me, camp185.

I believe it is an effort to appear more professional in appearance, but I am not sure. If you search for the word “justify” on the Internet, you will find a thousand pages of webmasters trying to figure out how to do it. It’s easy, you just set your alignment to equal justify.

Sample Code: <p align=”justify”>paragraph</p>

Now That You Know How, STOP IT!

You should justify text when using it in block quotes, particularly long quotes. This is the best, most clearly defined use of the justify setting. I am being a little vague on this because I admit, I am not a member of MLA, Modern Language Association, and I cannot find my book to give you the exact details. To slam-dunk this idea though, I want to give you another reason why you should avoid it. Computers mess it up.

Computers Can’t Justify

Yes, they can, but not like people can. Using justify on the web can produce even worse effects than most document applications. The spacing quality is often poor, and can lead to huge gaps if there are several small words on the line. Another more important issue is that visitors use those text alignments to help understand the site design.

If you were to look at 100 web pages today, you would most likely see main menus on the top, left, and center. You can even find some sites with menus on all three spaces. Most web surfers are used to this, and with a quick glance, they should be able to understand where to start. Aligning your text to the one margin only, will help give them an indication on where to start. I would suggest the left please. Aligning text on just one side will also eliminate the extra spaces that occur between the words giving you a real professional appearance. Then, when it comes time to quote someone else’s content, it will all be clearly justified.

So my first review today I come across a site title “Blog webmaster”. The title is followed by “Search engine, optimization, make money”. I was disappointed at first. My first impression was a keyword plug to help the site get targeted hits from search engines. The first chunk of the site simply didn’t make sense to me, and was accompanied with six “Your Ad Here” banners. Then I scrolled down to find a site worth reading. Blog webmaster (http://webmastergroup.org/, the link was removed due to the fact it has not worked for over one week).

The site is a blog filled with money making tips on how to make money online. Something I am for sure interested in. It has search engine optimization tips, affiliation tips, and a ton more. They’re not just links. It’s filled with real advice that helps you make a more intelligent decision. It even has several tips on how to pick your domain hosting company. It’s a great place to start if you new to the industry.

If it was my site, I might move the literature section to its own page, and simply have a link to it as another resource. I’d also put the banner ads underneath recent post so new visitors can see the recent posts. The site would look a lot more natural, and would then very quickly draw you in simply on great material. As an overall review though, I do like the information it has packed into it. It at least deserves a bookmark if you are serious about making money online.
