Music, videos, script, and anything that has to do something after page load is a burden on users. When is enough enough? When people started figuring out how to add music to websites it took off like crazy. Then people figured out that users might already be listening to music, heard lots of complaints about it, and they stopped. At least most of them.

Well now there is a new technology, and it’s called video. Want proof that history often repeats itself? Just look around for websites that automatically load video now. The numbers are insane, and apparently these people have no clue, or have completely forgotten the lesson learned from adding auto loading music. Users don’t want auto playing extras! Monday I wrote a post about why you should probably not have music automatically playing on your website, Music on Your Website. One really good reason came from comment I found on a webmaster forum. The commenter said they are usually already listening to music, and a websites tunes just interrupts their music. That’s a pretty good reason.

I’m not sure how important it really is though, so I think a poll like this will help us get an idea how many do listen to music while using their computer. Is music on a website really interrupting that many music lovers?

After recently reading a webmaster forum, I saw the dreaded question “Should I put music on my website?” I saw the usual replies by others, mostly saying don’t do it. I had to agree with them for various reasons, but then someone commented, I generally have music playing, so I hate music n websites. That’s good enough reason for me.

The Hostile Takeover

Something that I just absolutely HATE is getting linked to a PDF file or some other file that is not going to be automatically opened by my browser. I consider them to be a hostile takeover of my PC, and if you linked to an especially large file, I smite you! My PC is old, needs more memory, and being forced to open up another application was not what I was looking to do. Identify yourself Mr. Link, at least if it’s not an HTML page. Continue reading »
