Doing a little digging around on McAfee’s website today, I came across a pretty cool feature they have for website owners. It can also be used by anyone if you simply curious of how safe a website is.

The service is McAfee’s SiteAdvisor. The service basically reports if the site analyzed has any known problems or complaints. It shows how many times a site has been reported for spam, if it has adware, if it has popups, and items of that nature. What I really found interesting though, was it Green Affiliation report. A month ago today I moved my Google Analytic code up to the top of my site. Google suggests keeping it near the footer of a site. I did this to ensure I capture as many visitors as possible. Doing this, I expected more visitors to be tracked because I could catch those that normally bounced off the site before the whole page had loaded. I also expected an increase bounce rate because I was now doing a better job at capturing those visitors. Continue reading »

Just playing around last night I decided to overlap 20 popular blogs ranked by fans on Technorati. I wanted to see if there was some hidden consistencies in their layouts. After I overlapped each blog at 10% opacity, I cranked the contrast, and this is the end result.

Headers

I think most of us would expect to find the header on top, and that is where it was prominent when I did the overlap. It was not the case for all blogs though. Many had ads on top, or even content snapshots that pushed the header with logo down as much as 300 pixels. I think mine will stay where it is. Continue reading »

The title says it all here. Trying to reduce my sites overall bounce rate this month I found working on the homepage could be one of the biggest helpers. What did I do? I reduced the size of my introduction message, which brought the blog posts up. The end result? A 11.25% decrease in bounced visitors. Continue reading »

Back in July I was busy working on trying to increase my page views by whatever means. A month ago today, I introduced the comment notify check box to this site using the Subscribe to Comments plugin developed by Mark Jaquith. I figured I could get a few more return page views that way, and I new it worked well on another blog I have. Continue reading »

Yesterday I posted about how I will be working on reducing my bounce rate for the next month. One of the first methods I plan on doing this is by figuring out what are my most offending pages. Looking not just for that high bounce rate, but looking at the total number of visitors that bounced. Continue reading »

It hasn’t been a month since I posted Turning the Weakest Link Into a Winner, but I can’t stand it anymore. Besides I accomplished my goal. My goal was to get my total page view count to surpass my industries benchmark for page views, and I had one month to do it. See how you can use Google Analytics to find those numbers. I also had set a personal goal of total page views in thirty days which I accomplished as well. I’m done trying to get more page views, at least for now. Continue reading »

What do Spin Doctors do? They Rock!!! No, no, no, I am not talking about the band. I’m talking about those sales gods that can turn a losing prospect into their best customer. How do they fix a website? They turn the bad parts of a websites into its best attribute.

A Widget Won’t Fix Your Site

A common habit among new webmasters is to think of something or add something to their site that will just make it way better. They go on adding chat boxes, Twitter badges, counters of all sorts, and flicker streams. Some of that stuff might be of real interest to your viewers, but none of them fix your site.
