Monday I wrote a post about why you should probably not have music automatically playing on your website, Music on Your Website. One really good reason came from comment I found on a webmaster forum. The commenter said they are usually already listening to music, and a websites tunes just interrupts their music. That’s a pretty good reason.

I’m not sure how important it really is though, so I think a poll like this will help us get an idea how many do listen to music while using their computer. Is music on a website really interrupting that many music lovers?

Here is the poll: Do you listen to music while using your computer?

  1. Blogger Rise says:

Yes sometimes I listening music while I`m online

  2. I have music on my computer over 3/4th of the times.

  3. ‘Most of the time’ has 48% of the votes, nice :D

    • Combine that with sometimes, and you have a lot of people listening to music already. This could be the number one reason why you shouldn’t auto load music on your site. Still need some more votes to really know though.

  4. Crack says:

Sometimes it’s really that simple, isn’t it? I feel a little stupid for not thinking of this myself/earlier, though.

    • You know, I have read a thousand posts about how loading music on a website is bad. All of them used the same reason. The answers were always about how annoying it is. I watched users deal with it, and the usual response…click the off or pause, as fast as they can. They generally hate it without their own music playing.

When I read that thread on the forum recently about how the user hated music on sites due to interruptions of their own music…well I wrote this post. Before that I had no other reason than knowing people didn’t like it.

Looking at the poll results so far, it also looks like a lot of people are getting interrupted! Anybody reading this…don’t auto load music on your site!

  5. Music playing on a website is unprofessional, takes too long to load, and is just plain annoying. Unless you have a fun website or something that caters to the type of people that would think music on your site is cool (ie weird people, 16 year olds, etc) then don’t do it.

Most of the time I’ve got music on, seems to help me do my work.

    • Hi Alex,

So I am guessing you are not a big fan of sites that load it automatically. How do you feel about videos auto loading? This is something that I have been watching, but don’t hear many complaints about.

  8. [...] So here is the main reason I personally hate auto loading video and audio. It’s because I am often already listening to something. Believe it or not, I like to listen to podcast and video interviews. There is nothing I hate more than having someone else’s video or music that starts playing over what I am already listening to. Yes, I know I loaded the page, but I didn’t hit play, did I? Please vote on the poll about music. [...]
