Check out this annoying captcha. All the lower case letters that normally fall below the base line get cut off, and may appear different than they are. Before you drop one on your site, think about what a captcha is really designed to do, and if there is an alternate way to avoid it. Most sites, and I mean 99% of them, don’t require a captcha at all.
This captcha was found on a simple contact page. Did it need it? No way! First, the form was found on a WordPress built site. There are some great WordPress plugins that will kill 98% of your spam. I use just one of them. Notice any captchas on this site? Second, simple validation of the form fields could prevent spam itself. The message field on this form was not even required. Ouch! Captcha’s are anti usability for a website.

The only way for me to fill out the field now is by either memorizing the image, or writing it down. That is very annoying to say the least, and if you know me, I don’t need another reason to hate captchas. [...]
