I will be the first to admit, if you think about my domain name, bestwebimage.com, it does not make you think of website usability or design. It’s more of a second thought, as in making your site look its best. What image do visitors have of your site? I hope it’s the best:)
Yesterday I came across Craigslist Information. This site pretty much slam dunks how to pick a domain name to fit their topic. What is the domain name? It’s Craigslist.info. They additionally compliment the the title with a great tag line “All you need to know about craigslist.org”. Now I am not sure if they are affiliated Craigslist or not, they may have some legal guys bugging them soon, but I do know this. Their is absolutely no confusing what their site is about.
Their menu is also very clear, and on topic. I guess if you need help trying to figure out how to do stuff on Craigslist, a help page on another site sure as heck better be as easy as possible.
Lesson for the day? Conveying a clear message to a visitor can start with the domain name. My domain name? Well, it is ten years old, and matches my company name. I am sticking with it.

Domain names is also very important for search engine optimization too. If you want to rank well for certain keywrods, it helps having those keywords in your domain.
Ping, I wouldn’t say its ‘very important’ I would say it’s just another one or two percenter – but they all add up. More important is the incoming link text, but you probably already knew that
I think the .info site my run into some trouble if they are not affiliated with craigslist due to the use of the name in the url and site content. Time will tell!

That would for sure make me nervous.
Domain name can certainly make a difference in terms of SEO. If you’re a company that sells sports socks (don’t know where that came from) called Acme Imports Inc you might be better off picking a domain name like sports-socks.com. Of course, I didn’t take any of my own advice on this! None at all. My company is called Generator. My domain igenerator … and I don’t have anything to do with generators!!! Drrrr
