When I tell people that I build websites, a common reaction is, “Oh, I need a website.” Not much longer, the process of building a new website has begun, and sooner or later I ask the dreaded question, “Do you have a logo?” Those of you that have been building websites for a while now know the answer to this on. The normal response, “Can you do that?” My reaction? I guess so, if that is something you want to pay me to do.

Getting a Professional Logo

A important question to ask yourself when getting a logo is do you want your local webmaster to create your business identity, or do you want a professional graphic designer that specializes in logos to help brand you? This October 2009, Network Solutions introduced a new service where you can now get a custom logo for as low as $205, Custom Logo Design Service. They offer two basic plans,  Freelance and Standard.

The freelance version is $205. The money is essentially a prize for a logo designing contest managed by Network Solutions. The standard solution is $399, and honestly I don’t see the real advantage to it. With the standard version you work with one professional that has a five step process to come up with a logo for you. You can give them input throughout the process, and they will also develop multiple varieties.

The freelance version however, by it’s own method will produce a variety of ideas, and with all of those ideas, you can submit feedback to improve upon them. As a guy who test websites, and who has developed many sites, my experience is to not rely on just one designer. Getting just three or four different logos from completely different persons could completely blast your expectations. Odds are good one of them may even have a great idea you didn’t even think of. Give it a couple of back and forths, and you could have a logo that you are simply in love with.

Seems to me like this is a pretty smooth move by Network Solutions. I guess they have built a few websites themselves, and know the answer to that common question as well. Do you do logos? Why yes, they do!

  1. I’m glad I have the artistic ability to draw my own logos, but $200 seems fair for someone who can’t.
