On the weekends I like to jot down ideas for future posts, but this weekend it just didn’t happen. I’ve been having fun with Spykee, a pretty cool little toy that I purchased from Woot for half it’s regular price.

What is Spykee?

Spykee is about a one foot high wireless remote controlled toy that has audio, video, and motion sensitivities. With a few clicks from my PC I can turn on Spykee from anywhere in the world and drive him around my house. The cat was its first face to face visitor, and ever since then I have had a blast driving it around.

Because it can hear and has speakers, you can virtually talk and see others through your PC and Spykee. One of it’s first runs I was showing it to my wife. She was downstairs, and I was upstairs. The whole time I was talking to her while driving it around. When she later came upstairs we talked about it, and she didn’t even realize she was talking through Skypee. She thought she was talking directly to me. Continue reading »

A strange little thing to notice. Today, BestWebImage.com had its 1,000 comment. It also had its 20,000 spam comment that Akismet blocked. If you don’t have Akismet installed on your blog, these figures might be a good inspiration to do so now.

Well it’s a new month, and this is where I like to usually brag about the changes I made to my site. I set the goal, I go after it, and usually with some success the mission is achieved. For September it was all about attacking my average pageviews per person. I wanted that number to go up. Too bad it didn’t.

Blogging

In the blogging world, keeping or getting a high page view per visitor is a challenge. In August I averaged just 1.92 page views per session. My goal for this is currently 2.5. It may be a bit of a stretch. I don’t do many series posts, one of the best ways to get more page views, and even if I did, I don’t think I will hit the goal that way. I need something more, and looking at what I did in September to improve it you will see it’s going to have to be something hot. Continue reading »

Three weeks ago I took a leap of faith, and moved by search box from a location that would be perceived by most as the best place to have it. It was in the header on the right. Highly visible, on every page, and was very much in it’s own zone. Usability wise, it appeared to be a win. Apparently though, that was far from the truth.

Picking the Location

When the search box was in it’s old location it acted as a dedicated fail safe method for visitors to find my content. My main menu, running horizontal in the header, lead to the search box, so it appeared to be a logical placement. Can’t find what you are looking for using the menu? Try searching. A month ago today I moved my Google Analytic code up to the top of my site. Google suggests keeping it near the footer of a site. I did this to ensure I capture as many visitors as possible. Doing this, I expected more visitors to be tracked because I could catch those that normally bounced off the site before the whole page had loaded. I also expected an increase bounce rate because I was now doing a better job at capturing those visitors. Continue reading »

Are you a small business owner with a website? Here is a quick checklist I developed just for you making sure you are at least covering the basics for your website.

Website Checklist for small business owners.

Working on increasing my average page views per visitor this month I decided to take a look back on how things are going comparing these 30 days to the prior.

The Big Ouch

Before looking at my stats I believed my initial outlook was good. I expected more page views per viewer. Unfortunately, this was not the case. I had a big OUCH.

A month ago today I did something that I thought would help my site out by complying more with Google’s SEO suggestions. Google suggest that you do not have more than 100 links on one page. A month ago and a day I averaged about 150 links on my home page. For every post, I had links to their categories and tags. I decided to delete those links, and only display them on the specific post pages. Continue reading »

What are better visitors? Well, that all depends. What do you want your visitors to do? This month I have been working on increasing the average page views per visitor. So for me, right now, a better visitor would be one that generates more page views. I feel that this is currently a weak spot on my site, so I am doing whatever it takes to improve it. Check it out my friend… Just about every popular blog has their search box in the top right. Yours is there, right? Mine certainly was. I repeat, was. That above the fold property is just too valuable for me now. I have big plans for it, no not an ad, but featured posts. I’ve wanted a featured post section up there for a long time now, but I felt the search box was far to important to have there. Well, Mr. Search Box, you have finally been demoted. Continue reading »
