Sometimes you just have to bite your tongue, or in the case of blogging, sit on your hands.

If your blog is about improving websites, like this one, ranting about politics could be the worse thing you or I could do. This morning, the urge for me to get off topic ranting about politics was at an all time high.

Knowing that I often unfollow people who express political opinions that oppose me, I decided to turn it into  a reminder for others to keep it keep on topic.

The Topic Is…

When I do an analysis on a website, checking to see if the site stays on topic is actually one of the items I check. When I do this, I’m not looking for the occasional off topic rant on a blog though. I’m looking at the active, highly visible content that is distracting to the main topic on the home page or in the template.

I often find: poorly matched ads to content, ads that have a higher priority in positioning than main content, links and banners to personal websites (even from ecommerce websites), and the local weather report.

weather

I mention the weather report for two reasons. The first, it’s a common occurrence to see them on websites and blogs that having nothing to do with travel or weather. The second reason is the fact that I actually have a weather station. I could be displaying something in the sidebar on this blog. It’s not what this site is about though, so I don’t.

The lesson here…stay on topic, keep your site highly focused (even its ads if you can), and don’t go ranting about politics unless your site is about it. Don’t lose followers or visitors because of because an urge you have to go off topic.

  1. Thanks for the reminder to stay on topic. I can’t tell you how many times I read something online and have a strong desire to write about it on my blog. I try to justify it in my mind that starting a controversy (about something completely off the blog subject) may bring me more comments even if they are disagreeable ones. I have to have a little come to Jesus meeting in my mind and stop the madness. Now I can at least refer to this post, give myself a little head slap and continue on with the subject at hand. Thanks!

  2. hahah that’s sound funny but still have thoughts keep posting

  3. Sometimes its hard to stay on topic as the blogoshpere is about speaking your mind. Same goes for Twitter. I’d like to comment on my favorite sports team sometimes but we’re health and nutrition related and need to stay on message. Good blog post.

  4. I really like your blog and i really appreciate the excellent quality content you are posting here.I’ll be back for more information’s and tips soon.

  5. Great point. It is annoying to go onto a site and be distracted by content that is off topic. If you want to dominate an area you need to stay true to its form.

  6. You are right coupon. I truly agree with you.
