Over the past couple of years I’ve made a few posts about how to write a description meta tag. One of them, Your Description Sucks is about making sure that you write a good one, or Google will just use your content on what they think is best. The second one is, Google Wants You to Be More Specific, and that was the one that made me change how I do my own. The end results? A few days later Google was caching my posts with minutes. Another Google Analytics post, but this one is to announce a cool new feature that Google added. Located right underneath the Dashboard on your analytics report you will now find, Intelligence Alerts. Easily watch, and optionally get emailed if your important target numbers or goals are not performing as planned.

Like custom reports you can create your own alerts, but Google has already made several of them for you to copy into your own reports.

Templates that Google has already created:

  • Total visits decreases by more than 50.0%
  • Unique visitors decreases by more than 50.0%
  • Total page views decreases by more than 50.0%
  • Average bounce rate increases by more than 50.0%
  • Average time on site decreases by more than 50.0%
  • Percent new visitors decreases by more than 50.0%
  • Goal conversion rate decreases by more than 50.0% Continue reading »

So you just wrote a new post on your WordPress Blog, and it has a whopping zero comments so far. Like bragging about it? I don’t. I also don’t like search engines like Google caching 10 counts of the word comment. If there are no comments, I say, why brag about it. Fortunately,  WordPress lets you easily customize this in your templates.

Comment Template Tag

The comment template tag used in your WordPress site appears something like this: comments_popup_link(’0 Comments, ’1 Comment’, ‘% Comments’) Continue reading »

Do you include your website link in your email signature? I would hope so. Do you have a mailing list where you email your subscribers on a regular basis? As well, I hope so. Do you really know how effective your email campaigns really are though? When sending out emails there are a couple of easy ways to track their effectiveness. You can link to pages specifically designed for emails, or you could simply make the link include some sort of identifier. Unfortunately, those methods only track the email that you send out. What if someone shares your site through email that you didn’t send? Are you tracking those?

With Google Analytics you can track not only your email campaigns, but what others are emailing while referencing your site. Know how viral your site really is! It’s all done with Google Analytics Advanced Segments, and I will include a link to share this filter with you at the end of the post. Continue reading »

When building a form for your website know that visitors often use the tab key to move to the next form field. One thing that just drives me nuts, and many others I am sure, is when you hit the tab button you are moved to the wrong location.

What Stops Users

Three things reduce the percentage of getting a form completed: the number of fields, the grouping of form element types, and the time it takes to fill out. The number of fields is an obvious one. An example of grouping is putting all your text boxes one after another followed by drop downs, then by check boxes, and so on. The goal there is to try to keep the users hands on one tool, avoiding switch backs from keyboard to mouse, and then back. Continue reading »

One of the first plugins I added to this blog was WP Ajax Edit Comments. Today, I was really wishing that a popular blog that I like to visit did the same. I cranked out a quick comment, hit submit, and said oh crud. I made the comment without double checking it, and now it’s stuck there with no chance for correction. It even got a comment from another visitor, so it’s really stuck there. A comment editor could be a real life saver for your users. Continue reading »

Originally titled “Why Build a Website for Ten People?”, I’m hoping this post attracts the attention of small business owners who feel their company website was a complete waste of time and money.

How many small business owners have pathetically low visitor counts to their websites? Most. How many business owners are completely over having a website because their website does next to nothing besides having a small online presence? Most. A message to those business owners: The internet is not the local yellow pages, so don’t expect to website to work like a large yellow page ad. Continue reading »

I don’t recall ever having a martini while signing up with a new web host, but I may have had a few beers setting up a personal one. Pictures help draw a visitors attention, and Velcom.com is putting this theory to the max. Bikini girl and cocktails, the perfect recipe for getting some tech geek guys attention.

Velcom offers cheap web hosting service, and in their words, offer cheap VPS hosting. Continue reading »
